Press Roundup: Interviews, Blurbs, & Reviews

Califone: The Progression Sessions (X-Press Online Interview) - “At one point we wanted to get the sound of- I’m not sure if you have this going on over [in Australia] but here in the cities people have really, really loud car stereos blasting hip-hop. Sometimes if you are at a stop light next to one of these cars you hear the bass coming out of the trunk, and we wanted to get that sound on some of the stuff. In our studio now there is a metal heater and we put a big bass speaker near the metal heater and miked the heater so you get the sound of the bass bouncing off this loose piece of tin. Executing that stuff is pretty easy, it’s just coming up with the idea.”

Califone: Roots for the Twenty-First Century (The Brooklyn Rail) - “There are apartment recordings, bathroom recordings, little carpeted rooms and big studios,” said Rutili of the places where the songs of Roots & Crowns were created.

The Year Of the Chanteuse (NY Sun Blurb) - [Roots & Crowns] is the best album of their burgeoning career…Califone is on course to spawn the most delicate musical accomplishments of the young century.

‘Roots & Crowns’ Review (Contactmusic.com) - Califone have bubbled under for more than 10 years now, and it is has always been hard to understand why - Roots and Crowns knocks spots off anything Wilco have done in five years: it is engaging, dramatic, coherent and cohesive. Never likely to grace a supermarket shelf. Which may well be its best recommendation (9/10).

I was late to discover these guys, though I’ve been hearing/reading about them for a few months. I finally remembered to pick up some CDs the last time I was in my local music store and was immediately floored. The songs and sonic textures are amazing - Roots & Crowns is by far the best album from 2006 and has been in regular rotation at my house and in my car for the last month.
Anyhoo…. Thanks for doing what you do.
